At 7:15 p.m., journalist Amanda Lang was arrested as she
left the CBC building. 37 minutes earlier, live on
Power & Politics, she had called the banking system
a machine for making money out of ordinary people, and
had shown millions of viewers the platform that banks
use for their own investments. Before midnight, the
recording of the program was removed from every
platform. The same message appeared everywhere: “Content
removed by court order.”

On Tuesday evening, Power & Politics on CBC was
meant to be a calm conversation about how citizens can
protect their money in times of crisis. Host David
Cochrane invited two people onto the set: the Governor
of the Bank of Canada, Tiff Macklem, and Amanda Lang,
one of Canada's most recognized financial journalists,
who spent six years as this network's senior business
correspondent and now hosts a weekly business program.
No one expected the broadcast to end in scandal and the
night in an arrest.
Our newsroom has obtained the complete transcript of the
conversation that led to our former colleague’s arrest.
The court has only banned the video. The transcript and
quotations are not affected by the order. We are
publishing everything.

"Welcome. Tonight we are discussing something that
affects all Canadians: banks are posting record profits
while families cannot make it to the end of the month
and pay their mortgages. How can both things happen at
once? We are joined by the Governor of the Bank of
Canada, Tiff Macklem, and journalist Amanda Lang.
Governor, let’s begin with you. Banks are making more
than ever, Canadians are drowning in debt. How do you
explain it?"
Tiff Macklem: "David, let’s not confuse two
things. Bank profits are an indicator of the system’s
stability. A stable banking system is a guarantee for
every citizen. If banks stop making profits tomorrow,
your deposits are the ones at risk. People should be
grateful that the system works."
Amanda Lang: "Be grateful? You want people who
put 70% of their pay into a mortgage to thank the banks
for record profits?"
Tiff Macklem: "I want people to stop looking for
someone to blame and start educating themselves about
finance. The problem isn't the banks. The problem is
people signing mortgages they can't afford. That's on
them."
David Cochrane: "Governor, isn’t that the same as
blaming people for being poor?"
Tiff Macklem: "I am stating facts. Not everyone
can be rich; in the economy, some always earn more and
some earn less. That is not the banks’ fault; it is
reality."
Amanda Lang: "That's not reality. That's a system
you built and protect. You take people’s money at 1.5%,
make dozens of times more with it, and then tell them
it's their own fault."
Tiff Macklem: "That is populism. You're a
television journalist, not a central banker. You don't
understand how the real banking system works."
Amanda Lang: "I've spent 25 years explaining on
television how it works. And that's exactly why your
voice is shaking."
David Cochrane: "Amanda, then explain it. Tell
our audience exactly where the money banks report in
their annual statements comes from."
Amanda Lang: "With pleasure. Banks take people’s

Jim Treliving: "I watched the last ten minutes.
I've got one thought: finally, somebody said it out
loud."

— A white patrol car parks next to exit B of the CBC
building. Two officers wait inside.

— The officers get out of the car. One says: “Amanda
Lang? You are under arrest.” Amanda calmly puts her
phone in her pocket, turns to her producer, and says:

Amanda calmly holds out her hands, smiles, and says to
the camera:

saying this for 25 years. They will not stop me now.”

— Amanda is taken to the police station and refuses to
make a statement without a lawyer.
Official reason: a complaint by the Bank of Canada for
publicly inciting unauthorized financial transactions.
Before midnight, the recording was removed from the CBC
website, YouTube, and all social-media platforms.
Jim Treliving broke his silence
That same night, at 8:40 p.m., the 47-second arrest
video recorded by the producer had already spread across
the country. Amanda’s smile as she was handcuffed and
her words to the camera became the night’s most
discussed topic. 1.2 million views in the first
eight hours. Jim Treliving saw the video and picked up
his phone. He was sitting in his home kitchen in a
T-shirt, clearly not intending to record anything, but
he began speaking directly to the camera.

Our newsroom made a video call with Treliving. We asked
him to show his account, and he turned his phone toward
the camera. He has been on the platform for six months
and started with $250. The balance on the screen was $58,400, and he
withdraws part of it every month. We saw the transaction
history and the deposit and withdrawal dates; everything
matched what he said on the broadcast.
"Every month I withdraw money to my regular bank
account. No delays, no hidden fees. Six months, no
problems."
We asked why he was risking his reputation over this.
Treliving: “I am not risking my reputation. If I stayed
silent, then I would be risking it. Tonight they
arrested a journalist for telling the truth. I cannot be
fired or intimidated; if I stay silent, who will say
it?”
Canada rose up for Lang
The next morning, around eight, people began gathering
outside the CBC building. The demonstration was not
organized; no one created a social-media event or
printed flyers. People simply came. By nine, there were
already more than 800.
David Cochrane arrived at the CBC building at nine
in the morning and did not plan to speak. But when the
crowd saw him, people moved aside and he found himself
in the front row, with a handwritten sign: “Journalism
is not a crime.”
Our reporter asked him on site: “Aren’t you worried
about the fallout?” David Cochrane: “I'm a host, not a
censor. My job is to ask questions. Yesterday I asked
questions, and the Governor left without answering.
Today I am here because my guest was arrested for
answering.”
Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), 10:15 a.m.:
“The arrest of a journalist for statements made during a
live broadcast constitutes a direct attack on press
freedom. We demand the immediate release of Amanda Lang
and that the proceedings be dropped entirely.”
Lang was released. She said more than she had said on
the broadcast
The next day, at 12:17 p.m., the Office of the Attorney
General announced that it had found no wrongdoing in
Amanda Lang’s actions. The Government officially
confirmed that
